A Little Appreciation

Attitudes are one of the essential elements of the PYP program. In addition to knowledge, transdisciplinary (connections across all subjects) teaching and learning, and Approaches to Learning, the attitudes are a vital element in cultivating an internationally minded person. The attitudes are exemplified in the different books that teachers choose to read aloud to their classes, brought into class discussion, and used as a reflection tool for students after learning engagements. Teachers, in turn, model these attitudes, further supporting students as they reflect on their experiences here at Spicewood.

In Kindergarten, the students read the book, In November by Cynthia Rylant, discussed all of the unique things that we typically find during the fall season (cooler temperatures, migrating animals, bare trees), and finally reflected on how we can appreciate the change of the seasons. Afterwards, students wrote about what they appreciated in their own lives.
