What’s Happening

The ‘Hour of Code™’ is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. We live in a world surrounded by technology and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. Our entire school continues to participate in one of the largest learning events in history – The Hour of Code. During Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 5th-9th, the Hour of Code aims to demystify coding and show that anybody can learn the basics by just coding for one hour during this week.

Students will have an opportunity to learn or extend their knowledge of programming concepts during this week. We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher and volunteer during this week if you can! Together we can encourage the problem solving, logic, and creativity that is the foundation of technological literacy.

We would like to keep you updated on the Spicewood Teaching Garden and our primary source of communication will be the Spicewood Teaching Garden Facebook Page.  We encourage you to follow us on our Facebook page  so you can see how the teachers use the garden, how you can help out, and how the garden grows throughout the year.

Now that our garden is built and planted we need your help to keep it growing. You do not need to be a gardener – No Green Thumbs Required! We are asking families to “adopt” the garden for a week to help us keep the garden growing for the students and teachers at Spicewood throughout the year. There are only 31 weeks left in the school year so SIGN UP early! Responsibilities are easy – light weeding & watering several times during the week, depending on how hot/dry the weather is. Specific instructions will be emailed before your week begins. Don’t delay, sign up today for your chance to take care of the garden!

This year we will be expanding Coding Club to all students in grades K-5! We will also be taking ACTION in our community by donating all club dues to the Play for All Foundation and the Play for All Park Expansion Project. We chose this project because the park provides a safe, fun place for children of all abilities to play and develop skills and they are working to expand the park, doubling it in size! The suggested donation is $20 for students to participate in the club, but since we are donating 100% of the proceeds to Play For All, you may contribute more. We will host three 8-week sessions.
