What is an internationally minded person?
As students inquire into the transdisciplinary theme, Who We Are, each year, they are provided with an opportunity to further investigate and explore “… the nature of self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.” We recognize and appreciate that students who come into the PYP program here at Spicewood come from various backgrounds and a wealth of experiences. We value the diversity of our community and celebrate it throughout our classrooms and hallways as students make connections to the concepts they are learning in their classroom sparked by learning experiences as well as other enrichment opportunities that support the PYP curriculum framework.
Every spring, our PTA sponsors a community event called, One World, One Night, a unique event that transforms our cafeteria into a celebration of cultures from around the world. Visitors take a “trip around the world” and sample ethnic foods, play traditional games and crafts, and learn more about different cultures from around the world from members from our very own community. Last spring the event featured Philippines, France, India, Mexico, Peru, Italy, China, Ethiopia, Bahamas, Korea, Venezuela, Panama, Colombia and Israel.
Whether you are interested in sharing more about your own culture or would like to attend, we invite you to set your calendars for Tuesday, February 27th to take this “trip around the world” with us! With International Mother Language Day next month, this event could not be more timely. We look forward to learning more about different cultures found right here at Spicewood!
This annual event would not be possibly without the participation of our community. If you are interested in contributing to this event, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to our list of countries.
